I’ve already talked about the benefits of having a safe. Today, gather your social security cards (they should NOT be in your wallet just in case you lose your wallet or it is stolen!), your birth certificates, your marriage license, and any final judgments of divorce you or your spouse may have–just about anything you would have to order from vital records, a clerk of court, or the federal government if you lost. Put all of those in your safe or your safe deposit box. I put mine in page protectors in a three-ring binder that is inside this safe.
One more thing: I also have a copy of my driver’s license and a copy of my husband’s driver’s license in our safe, just in case I need them. (I also have a scan of each on our hard drive. More on that later.)
Time required: Five minutes, but only because I didn’t have to locate any of these items; I already had them secured in my safe.
